Fry Bread
Description:
Fry bread is a traditional part of Native American cuisine throughout many parts of the United States. The history of this bread is not entirely certain, but it is likely that Native American tribes adapted recipes for a more traditional type of bread with European wheat flour. This bread is eaten throughout the US in areas with large indigenous populations, and can be prepared with savory ingredients or enjoyed as a dessert.
Ingredients:
(Makes 4)
Dough
1.5 cups flour (185 g)
1/3 cup water (80 ml)
1/3 cup milk (80 ml)
3/4 tbsp baking powder (6 g)
1/2 tsp salt (1.5 g)
1 cup vegetable or peanut oil
Preparation:
Combine the flour, water, milk, baking powder and salt in a bowl until a dough forms. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes. Separate into 4 even balls and let rest another 30 minutes.
Heat the oil in a pan over medium high heat. Using oiled hands, stretch out the dough ball into a disk and poke 2-3 holes in the middle. Then fry in the hot oil for 1-2 minutes on each side, until golden brown.
Notes:
Dust the freshly-made fry bread with powdered sugar for a dessert option.
